I hope everyone enjoyed the long weekend and the short week we had. Even with the short week we were able to continue learning about the properties of 3D shapes. We started using the Venn Diagram to sort 3D shapes based on these various properties and started to build and explore skeletons of prisms and pyramids. We continued to discuss the Season of Lent and what our Lenten promise might be. You are also welcome to send in any pancake mix or soup can donations for our school wide Lenten Project anytime you'd like. Finally we continued to explore magnets noticing that they don't actually have to touch objects in order to attract them.
Next week is our Library week so please send in any books that are at home. Have a great week. We had a fun and very full week! Two major focuses for this week were the beginning of Lent (Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday) and of course Valentine's Day. We spend some time exploring what Lent is, why it happens and what the 3 pillars are. The school also had its Ash Wednesday Liturgy with students receiving their ashes.
Language focused on -tch and -dge sounds and the fact that they both follow short vowel sounds. We continue to work on restating the question and starting to add in proof to support our answers. In math we explored our different 3D shapes, learning how to name them, determining what shape is what and the different properties of each category of shape. We were able to wrap up our week with snowshoeing and exploring magnets in science. Reminder that Monday is a holiday so enjoy the long weekend! And just like that, we are into February. We've had a great week. In math, we wrapped up our unit on fractions and have started exploring 3D shapes. We had some really interesting learning about syllables, including open and closed syllables and reading and writing multisyllabic words. Students have been sharing their learning about muscular force and friction and we explored our sense of smell describing different scents and how we react to them. We also completed our exploration of curling in gym.
Next week is the beginning of Lent with Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday. Students will be sharing in a pancake breakfast Tuesday morning (thanks to our school council) and our Ash Wednesday liturgy will be the following day. Wednesday is also Valentine's Day. We will be handing out Valentine's Wednesday morning so if your child is writing out their valentine's this weekend please refer to the student list that was sent home this week to help ensure no one is missed and for correct spelling of names. Report cards will also be posted on Wednesday. If you would like to discuss your child's progress please feel free to reach out and we can set up a phone call or meeting. Lastly we have library on Tuesday. Have a great weekend! I hope everyone is enjoying their PD Day. We had a great week working on fractions and exploring fair share problems, creating some beautiful winter art with water colours and exploring friction in science. Valentine's Day is coming up. Students will be able to exchange Valentine's Cards with each other, we just ask that if your child is going to hand out cards that they include everyone in the classroom. I will send home a class list with everyone's name next week to help with this. Enjoy your weekend!
