Happy New Year and welcome back! I hope that everyone has had a restful and fun filled holiday break. It is great to be back in the classroom and get back into the swing of things. We are currently finalizing our field trip and more information will be coming out shortly so please stay tuned! Here is what we were up to for the month of December.
In math we continued to explore graphing. The students have become very good at collecting data and then using that data to create their concrete and pictographs. I hope you have seen some of their work on Seesaw. Our big focus last month was on money. The students have learned to identify the different coins by name and value. Along with that they are also learning how to represent various amounts of money using a variety of different coins and in different ways. Our Secret Santa exchange was a big hit! The students did a great job earning money and then spending it on their Secret Santa. It was a lot of fun and helped the students show the spirit of the season through giving. In January we are going to begin directing our focus to geometry. In our language blocks we continued to work on sentence writing. The students have been working hard to self evaluate their sentences and are using feedback from me to improve their writing each time. Our letters to Santa were great and everyone was so excited when he wrote us back! We will be shifting our focus to descriptive writing in January. As report card time is drawing near I will be doing another reading assessment with each student. Please continue to read at home and practice word wall words. This goes a long way to students becoming lifelong readers. In science we completed our dioramas depicting what winter looks like. The students did a great job and showed good cooperation while working with their partners. In religion we focused our time on the Season of Advent. The students learned about the Jesse Tree and we heard many bible stories about the people who came before Jesus. We discussed the birth of Christ and how the season of advent is a time for waiting. We will continue the story of Jesus’ birth this week by discussing the arrival of the Three Wise Men. I will be sending home assessment that was done at the end of December in a few days. Please review the work, sign and return it. As always if you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me. *There will be no new word wall words this week as we get back into the groove of everything. |
