I hope that everyone had a great long weekend! Thank you to those that have signed the report card stub and returned it in the envelope. A friendly reminder to please do so asap if you have not. We are planning on going snowshoeing tomorrow and our word wall words for this week are; play, friend, always, again.
Each student will have in their mailbag a small ziplock bag labelled Student Name's Bag of 100 _________. I am asking that this weekend your child chooses an item to place in this bag and to count out 100 of them! Suggestions of things that could go in the bag are:
pompoms pasta grains of rice stickers buttons pennies rubber bands Pretty much anything that you can think of that will fit 100 of them in the bag! We have been working on our counting throughout the year. To help out the students I would suggest having them make groups of 10, then count by 10s to determine if they are at 100. Thank you for your support, this is going to be a fun day!! Today in the mailbags you will find the list of student names for Valentine's should you choose to make any as well as the February Scholastic Order which is due on Wednesday February 13th. As well...here is the information regarding our field trip next week!
Here is some information provided from the Mill of Kintail to help with preparing your child for our day. “Although indoor/heated space is available and used throughout the day, programs take place outdoors and students will need to come dressed appropriately for the weather. To ensure a comfortable and fun day, students should dress in layers and have warm winter boots, a jacket, snow pants, toque, mitts/gloves, and a scarf. Students may want to bring along an additional pair of socks and mitts/gloves to wear home at the end of the day.” “The Mill of Kintail requests ‘litterless’ lunches for all our outdoor education programs. Bringing food in reusable containers is a great way to cut down on garbage and would be very much appreciated as we pay per bag for garbage collection. All students should bring a lunch and a refillable beverage container. There is no water fountain available but we do have a tap!” As there is not a ton of space on the bus we ask that you try to send the smallest backpack possible. Or better yet, no backpack! All the students will need for the day is their lunch and perhaps an extra pair of mittens and socks. Well I think we can all agree that the weather this month has made for an interesting January. However, the students came back ready to learn and we have been having a lot of fun. Thank you to those who sent in money for the Animal Day, $530 were raised for the Humane Society. Plus we had a great time exploring measurement with our stuffies! Here is what we were up to for the month of January.
In math January was all about shapes. The students have been concentrating most of their time on 2D shapes ensuring that they know the names triangle, circle rectangle etc. but also expanding their vocabulary into rhombus and trapezoid. They have been learning about the difference between the shapes (sides and corners) and we have been creating pictures, exploring tangrams and practising using our geometry language during our math talks. At the end of the month we branched out into 3D shapes and will continue on in February. In our language blocks we have shifted our focus onto descriptive writing. The students have been learning the difference between nouns and adjectives and are working to include adjectives in their writing. We have described various pictures, our stuffies, bedrooms, minecraft, pokemon and monsters just to name a few. Our challenge now is to write more than one sentence while ensuring we are including capitals, periods, spaces and that our sentences make sense. We will continue along with this focus in the month of February. I have completed another reading assessment with the students and you may have seen their RazKids levels change. Please continue to read at home and practice word wall words. This goes a long way to students becoming lifelong readers. I also encourage you to have your child retell the story when they are finished. Can they remember the major events? Are they retelling the story in the correct order? Are they using language such as First, Then, Next and Finally? In religion we continued learning about the 3 Wise Men and the lengths they went to in order to find Jesus. We have begun our new Health Unit on healthy eating habits, which will continue into February and will also lead us into a deeper exploration of how energy is moved between the sun, plants and animals and ourselves. We have had a blast in music exploring boomwackers and bells and creating a variety of rhythms and beats. We have had a chance to do a bit of sledding this month during our phys ed times and have taken these opportunities as a way to explore safety outdoors. February is going to be a very busy month. Here are some important dates to keep in mind; Feb 7th - Sweater Day, wear your favourite sweater as we work to conserve energy by turning down the thermostat a degree or two. Feb 8th - Outdoor play day (students will spend the morning outside so please dress appropriately) Feb 11th - 100th Day of School! (we will be doing a variety of activities with 100 and the students are encouraged to dress as if they are 100 years old) Feb 12th - Our Field Trip to the Mill of Kintail! Thank you to those parents who will be joining us as volunteers. I still have a few spots left if anyone else would like to come along. I will post information in regards to our field trip this week. Feb 14th- Valentine’s Day! Dress in red, white and pink and be prepared for lots of Valentine’s fun. I will be sending home a list of all the students in the class if you would like to prepare Valentine’s to hand out. If your child chooses to make cards for their friends, please make sure they include everyone. Report Cards are also going home on the 14th. Feb 15th- P.D. Day Feb 18th - Family Day, enjoy the long weekend! I will be sending home a language assessment from this month. Please review the work, sign and return it. As always if you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me. |
